Stress management to reduce, prevent and cope with stress
We can’t do any things to stop external stressors to come to our life but we can help ourself to find out the way to cope and prevent or manage stress to reduce the risk of illness due to stress. In fact we can have more control over the situations that triggers stress or stressing events in our life. In fact the foundation of stress management is laid in simple realization that we have more control over our thoughts, emotions, work schedule, environment we live and the way we handle with the stressors.

The ultimate goal by taking charge of your thoughts, emotions, work, environment is to achieve balanced life, adequate time for work avoiding any deadline pressure, more time for every relationship to understand it better, time for relaxation and fun and self-control to hold up under pressure and take challenge head on.
How to take control over stressors
- Tracing the stressors source. As said that stress management begins with finding the cause that triggers stress in life. Though it is tough to trace every source of stress in our life as many a times they are mostly unpredictable. Yet, there are lots of stress that is self-created and we can avoid these stressors by discovering the cause and trying to make a way out for coping with that.In our normal we are much worried about deadlines, may it be for any official job or exams etc. But to identify the true source, you should look closely to your habits, attitude towards your responsibility and excuses. In most cases, its our own procrastination rather than actual job demand which lead to deadline stress. Until and unless we accept our responsibility towards our task to perform on schedule time, our stress level will never be under our control.
- Avoid un-healthy ways for stress management – There are healthy and un-healthy way to cope with stress. The selection of un-healthy way to manage stress though appears to be healthy for a while but it actually compounds your stress in long run.
Few unhealthy ways to cope with stress are as below.- Smoking
- Drinking
- Taking pills for sleeping.
- Trying to getting addicted to TV and computer
- Social boycott by withdrawing from friends and families.
- procrastinating.

- Physical violence and lashing on others as a way of manifesting your frustration.

Strategy for healthy way of managing stress -
- Avoid unnecessary stress – Avoiding everything considering it as stressors is not suggested neither it is social or human to issues that you should address, yet there are lots of unnecessary stressors that you can avoid and will be surprised to know about. Few tips of how to avoid unnecessary stress are as below.
- Say no to extra stressors - To most of us, we know about our limit after which we start fussing. We should stick to our limit and should learn to say no to extra added to our task when you are about to reaching that limit, whether it relates to our personal or professional life. Unable to do this will help you nothing but increases your stressors and consequently your stress.
- Avoid annoying people – Many a times we notice that we have unknowingly added someone annoying people in our friend’s or aquainties’ list. Be straight forward to them once you realize that meeting these people cause stress to you. Limit the time spending with that person but if possible it’s better to fix-up the relationship (if s/he is your Boss) or permanently break-up (not applicable for relationship with your Boss).
- Sort out your list of do’s & don’ts : It is never necessary to sort out your schedule, responsibilities and daily tasks. We often have much more in our daily list of do’s. But we should sort out the “shoulds” and “musts” in the list and set to priority and drop others toward the bottom of the list or completely eliminate them.
- Try to handle or alter the situation : It is not that every time we can end-up the relationship with every one to get rid of stressors. So, its better alternative to get a better control over situation by anticipating and prepare to tackle it.
- Express your feelings : Instead of bottling-up any fuss about someone, it is better to come over a fresh discussion over the issues in a respectful manner with the person you are bothering about to find out the solution and reduce stress.
- Compromising is best way : It is often found that we expect others to compromise as per our demands but on the other hand we too should be ready to compromise with our demands so as to find out a mid way for solution. It will help you to release stress up to much extent.
- Time management and be assertive : It is never possible to get read of stress when you are running behind the deadline. So, time management is the most vital factor for reducing stressors. Try to pre-plan for activities with little spaces in between them, so that you can alter them at need without increasing stress level. Even taking a back seat in life is not worth. If you have to go for an important piece of work and some of your friend has just got your home, be straight forward in a respected manner and tell him/her that you have only 10 min. to entertain them. This will help you to adjust with the situation without letting much stress on your life.
- Adaptation with stressors : When despite of all efforts you can’t alter the stressors then better way to get rid of stress is to change your gradually as per situation by looking at the bigger picture of the stressors in the long run, taking time to realize the stressors and finding opportunity in that. The way to do this is by setting a reasonable standard of your expectation, listening to music if you got stuck in traffic jam, throwing yourself a challenge in a positive way to test yourself that how smart you are to make your work out when you have low resources etc.
- Accept the unavoidable : Everyone should accept the unavoidable so that stress would not hover them. This is easy to do by not trying to control the uncontrollable like serious illness, death of beloved one etc. You should have the characteristic of forgiveness. Share your feelings with near and dear ones.
- Take out time for relaxation and fun : Besides being responsible for your job, you should also be responsible for your health too. Taking out little time for relaxing your nerves will help you to feel refresh both in terms of physical and mental health. Being refresh you will be more prepared to handle any future stressors.
- Make habit of a healthy lifestyle : A healthy life style will help you be more resistant to stressors. Few healthy life style habits are as below.
- Take 6 to 8 hrs of sleep daily.
- Healthy eating will keep your health is better state to resist the bad effect of stress.
- Avoid alcohol, smoking, caffeine etc.
- Exercise and meditate on regular basis.
