Facts relating smoking with diabetes

Studies between smoking and incidences of abnormalities in glucose levels (causing factor for diabetes) have revealed that smoking is independently associated with glucose intolerance and Type – 2 diabetes. In fact, smoking increases the relative risk of acquiring diabetes by over 2.1 times, as compared to the non-smokers. A team of Swiss researchers, who conducted a study on 1.2 million respondents for a period of 30 years, also found out that smokers are 44 percent more prone to Type – 2 diabetes. And, needless to say that this risk increases with increase in the number of sticks that you smoke.

It is also quite disheartening to know that not only are the direct smokers at risk. But, also those subjected to second-hand smoke or the passive smokers to be specific were also found to be at risk. A recent study of 4572 people over a span of 15 years has revealed that 17 percent of all the diabetics were passive smokers at some stage.

How does smoking causes diabetes?

The answer to this was obtained after several tiresome studies carried out by various eminent researchers. Their researches have revealed that smokers are insulin resistant. They exhibit insulin resistance syndrome. This primarily is because of certain toxins in cigarettes which affect the pancreas, the organ responsible for secreting insulin. Deficiency of insulin only causes diabetes.

Does smoking really aggravate disorders in a diabetic or is it just a rumour?

Most diabetic smokers when confronted with this just gave a casual nod and said that ‘Smoking makes them feel better. ’

Alas! Nothing can be said about one’s ignorance.

However the truth is, smoking like any other drug makes you feel good for a short while. And, in turn wipes out all your hard work to keep the complications away. In fact diabetics who smoke are at higher risk of aggravating their problems.

Studies by Dr. Ronald Klein, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his colleagues, have also revealed that smokers with Type-1 diabetes are 2.6 times more likely to have an episode of severe hypoglycemia or very low blood sugar. hypoglycemia can cause severe mental confusion or even coma.
