Although the colour of urine is a proven indicator of various potential diseases within the body but in most cases there are absolutely acceptable reasons for changing of urine colour to various tint or shades of yellow during pregnancy. The colour of urine is due to the different level of a pigment called urochrome in the urine. The concentration of that pigment increases in urine to different levels due to various factors during pregnancy which causes the colour changes to different shades of yellow. Sometimes dark yellow urine and sometimes bright yellow almost neon yellow. Though the reasons being different but it is rare that urine will remain completely clear or very pale yellow during the whole time span of pregnancy.

Urine colour change and their reasons

  • Bright yellow urine : During pregnancy bright yellow colour urine does not indicate threat to safe pregnancy. Bright yellow colour urine is due to prenatal vitamins and sometimes due to the kinds of diet intake during pregnancy. Foods like aspragus, carrots, beetroots etc. also causes temporary changes in colour of urine. It is highly recommended to take nutritious food rich in vitamins and minerals and to take proper vitamin medications prescribed by the doctors during pregnancy without bothering about the effect on the colour of the urine. If you have any query about it, please consult your doctor or midwife for suggestions.
  • Dark yellow urine : Dark yellow urine during pregnancy should not be mistaken as normal yellow urine during pregnancy for the above said reasons. Your body actually needs water and running short of it. The concentration of urochrome pigment gets increased in the urine and the urine turns yellow. Since water is an essential component of our body and it maintains our body system, keeps the body cells hydrated and keeps the flush system of the body in healthy state, so it is necessary to keep care about the fulfilling the water requirement of the body. The dehydration of body cells during pregnancy will bring about many other complications. Constipation is one of the consequences of dehydration which is the reason of many other problems.

Why urine turns yellow due to prenatal vitamin?

The prenatal vitamins are specially formulated multi-vitamins that make up the nutritional deficiencies in pregnant women’s diet. Apart from diet taken during pregnancy, these prenatal multi-vitamins are also responsible for changing the colour of urine to yellow. This is due to fact that as usual our body does not store the un absorbed essential ingredients for future use from the multi-vitamins taken by the pregnant women. As a result these un-absorbed ingredients tries to get flush off the body through urine. The presence of these ingredients in the urine concentrates it along with the urochrome pigment which turns urine colour to yellow.
But you should not stop taking prescribed multi vitamin only because it is effecting your urine colour or mistakenly thinking that it has no use in your body because it is coming out through urine. Actually the multi vitamins specially formulated for pregnancy are packed with essential ingredients that are required for the baby in feotus and the pregnant mother body that under goes through several deficiencies during pregnancy, but every pregnant mother’s body is not under going the same problems and deficiencies and hence probably does not require to absorb all the ingredients from the multi vitamin.
